Thalassaemias result from mutations in globin genes resulting in a reduced rate of synthesis. Haemoglobinopathies result from mutations in globin genes which produce a variant haemoglobin. This section describes the morphological features of the various thalassaemias and haemoglobinopathies, as well as the associated findings on haemoglobin electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography.
