Erythroid cells are agranular with round nuclei and low cytoplasmic complexity. As such, they have a low side scatter. They are CD45 negative.

Flow Cytometry: Erythroid Gate
Erythroid cells are side scatter low / CD45-.

Differentials for populations in the erythroid window include:

  • Normal nucleated red blood cells.
  • Pure erythroid leukaemia.
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome.
  • Plasma cells.
  • Leukaemia cells (typically precursor B lymphoid leukaemia).
  • Non-haematopoietic cells.
