Erythroid cells are agranular with round nuclei and low cytoplasmic complexity. As such, they have a low side scatter. They are CD45 negative.

Differentials for populations in the erythroid window include:
- Normal nucleated red blood cells.
- Pure erythroid leukaemia.
- Myelodysplastic syndrome.
- Plasma cells.
- Leukaemia cells (typically precursor B lymphoid leukaemia).
- Non-haematopoietic cells.
